John got his insurance license in September of 1922 while working for the bank in Pendroy. In 1933 the bank hit tough times and had to close shop, so John moved across the street next to the Pendroy Mercantile and opened up J.A. Swanson Agency, a real-estate and insurance business. In 1949 John was joined by his son-in-law Carl B. Field, and in 1955 by John’s son J.A. Swanson Jr.

With the two additional agents the agency expanded to add a Choteau office in 1958. Carl ran the Choteau branch until his death in 2004. John Sr. retired in 1956 and left the Pendroy branch in the capable hands of his son. In 1976 J.A.’s son-in-law Dan Rogers joined him in Pendroy, later followed by J.A.’s son Scott Swanson who opened up his law-office in the same building. Since that time the agency has expanded greatly and currently employs three agents, two secretaries, and one temp. in 1978 Joann Snodgrass came on as a secretary, but took time off to look after her children until 1991 when she returned. RT Snyder Jr. joined the staff in May of 1985 as an agent, and brought with him a wealth of experience. In April of 1991 J.A. retired from the agency after 36 years. In November of 1994 Jay Grubb joined RT and Dan as an agent at J.A. Swanson Agency, and brought his experience with Farm and Ranch to the table. In 2003 Diane Field joined the staff, and helped complete the secretarial duo of trouble. In June of 2008 J.A. Swanson Agency took on Scott’s son, and a 4th generation to work at the agency, Björn Swanson as a seasonal employee, and understudy. In August of 2012 he came on full-time.
